Tradition in responsibility
In 1866 family Krieger bought from the Beilngries brewage family Schattenhofer the then brewage estate in the city core of Riedenburg. At that time there were five more breweries and a “Kommun-Brauhaus” in Riedenburg. At the turn of the century began the brewery’s relocation step by step to today’s location in the quarter St. Anna.
The father (Michael Krieger, 3rd generation) of today’s owner began as one of very view breweries very early with the production of wheat beer. From that time on “Brauerei Unterkrieger” became the regional market leader with the widely known brand RIEDENBURGER WEIZEN.
Today’s chief executive (Michael Krieger, 4th generation) took over charge in 1970 having received a well-founded formation as (Diplom) brewage master and (Diplom) businessman.
The then years of growth were used to transform the traditional brewery to a modern small-scale enterprise. In 1975 Michael Krieger married Martha Krieger, nee Meier.
Exterior conditions changed rapidly for small-scale breweries because of the brewage industry’s emergence and the development of mono-brands. Many small-scale breweries assigned. Michael Krieger realized at an early stage the changing conditions and developed a corporate concept that has ensured the brewery’s continuity.
Today’s organic brewage philosophy is based on the combination of ecology and economy and is likewise indebted to sustainability and highest beer quality.
The family Krieger acts on the two maxims: ecology and the manufacturing of connoisseurs' beers. This iron basic principle that quality has top priority was developed further to an organic sustainable corporate philosophy by Michael Krieger.
Responsible use of natural resources, consistent environmental protection, primacy to regional circular flow, contribution to the preservation of rural structure, artisan and close to nature manufacture, full value conserved beer as valuable wholesome food.
From 1989 after a period of preparation, modifications were implemented in order to create an ecological enterprise. In 1994 the Riedenburger Brauhaus as first Bavarian brewery comes with a holistic ecological concept into the market.
Steps towards ecology:
- Construction of a new brewage estate with respect to ecological aspects.
- Boring of a new source in order to supply the brewery with artesian water without any need for treatment.
- Change of refrigeration engineering from damaging greenhouse gas to ammonia gas.
- Abandonment of conventional water treatment.
- Build-up of an organic brewage cereals and hops producer group.
- In 1992 the first two wheat beer types were organic brewed.
- In 1994 entire changeover of the full production to organic Bioland ingredients.
- Since 1997 we abstain from mechanical filtration. Although allowed in organic restrictions, we are convinced that beer in its wholeness can not disclaim to decisive integral parts.
- In the year 1997 the cooperation between Riedenburger Brauhaus and the organic operating Bioland Benediktinerabtei Plankstetten was launched. This was a milestone in Riedenburger Brauhaus history, because this cooperation fits to our environmental philosophy in the sense of regional circular flow economy and a shared belief in the value of the Creation. For this reason the abbey purchased a limited partner’s share.
Recent steps 1998 – 2006
- Photovoltaic construction was built on brewery’s roof by regional renewable energy investment group.
- Employment of regional won rapeseed oil for our vehicle fleet.
- Development of the supply of ancestral cereals einkorn, emmer, spelt in order to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and "diversity of taste".
- Development of gluten free beer (2006) made of millet malt.
